LEARN MORE ABOUT NEUROMANAGEMENT

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Why a Neuromanagement Centre?

Optimum Talent believes that Neuroscience information applied to business represents a breakthrough in improving an organization´s productivity. Optimum Talent decided to lead the way in bringing this information to the market; helping organizations in learning how to introduce these tools from neuroscientists in their culture and make a difference in their results.

Through our neuromanagement centre, we help you to better understand what is sometimes going on in that cranium of yours and provide practical insights and approaches that can help you be more effective in dealing with people at all levels of a business and with business challenges. We intend to be a gateway to learning in neuromanagement that will open thinking and approaches and provide neuroleadership coaching. We also want to share and encourage discussion.

  • How Neuromanagement can be of benefit to you?

There is a real flow between influencers, neurological activity in the brain, behavioural responses and practical benefit for an organization. We believe that knowledge and applications in the field of neuroscience can help enhance better relationships at all points on the compass – leaders, employees, peers and teams. This can only lead to better collaboration, idea generation and implementation of initiatives. You will be better able to mentor, coach and develop talent. In the end, this will manifest itself in better customer relations and business.

  • Why should a businessman or woman be interested at all in Neuromanagement? This all seems to be too emotional with not enough logical thinking to me.

This is exactly the reason why we have to be interested in these topics. We have the delusion that we are logical and rational beings most of the time. This is far from the truth.

  • Is there such a thing as “left and right brain thinking” or is that just a simple construct?

Since 1981 when Dr. Sperry was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his description of the division of activities between the right and left brain, the concept of the “distribution of tasks” between the two brain hemispheres

has become a more and more common language, in the scientific world as well as for the general audience.

Even though this concept is still accepted, it is now under discussion as to what the interpretation is exactly. At this moment what is known is that both hemispheres are needed for creativity and rationality. The “left side” is more detail-oriented (sees the tree), the right side works as an antenna (sees the forest).

What is the practical application of this concept? Having this knowledge in mind can make it easier to deal with people around us, from our team to peers, and even clients. We can in general terms, better understand their general pattern of communication and process of thinking. This may enable us to tailor our communication style to their language, and improve the communication process in general terms.

We are rational and logical beings embedded in an emotional package. Every single decision rational and logical, is filtered through our emotions. This process is not negotiable for our brain. At the moment our rational brain arrives at a conclusion that implies making a decision; there is no way to escape from the emotional control, filter, and influence.

Our emotional brain will be the one that is in charge of pressing the action button.

As Donald Calne´s says: “The essential difference between emotion and reason is that emotion leads to action while reason leads to conclusions.”

Remember that Emotion and Motivation have the same Latin root: “Movere” to take action.

  • Can I use neuroscience to help me better coach my direct reports?

Definitely yes. If I understand those processes/drivers that are behind my peoples’ behaviours, I can reorient my behaviour, words, and communication style in a way that will increase their engagement and, in turn, overall productivity and results.

  • Why do we need to know about how the brain works? I don’t need to know the inner workings of my brain. I’m not a neurosurgeon. We just need to be more aware of our behaviour.

Yes, we just need to be more aware of our behaviour. But with each passing day we can have access to very precise factual information of the brain´s circuits that drive our behaviour. We can now better understand the road map of our behaviour. The dashboard keeps us aware, through specific signs, how I, my team, and my peers are performing and how I can improve myself as a leader, and support the improvement of my team and colleagues in pursuit of more effective business activity.

  • Aren’t women’s and men’s brains the same? They all started out the same way ages ago.

Yes, we have the same tools but through thousands of years we´ve been using them in a different way. We trained our brain device to focus on different targets. Then each of brains went through different development.

Learn what neuroscientists haw to say about men's brain and women's brain and how it affects neuro-management

Men´s brains have developed more into a “hunting mode”, ready to recognize signs, to make deductions, to analyze, and to be able to identify any path that could lead them to the prey. Women´s brains were in charge of protecting the cave (home), the food and offspring, so they needed to be able at a glance to capture the whole picture.

The new generations of today are narrowing the gap. It is a market need. If you want to be successful you need to be capable of seeing the tree and the forest.

  • Is there really a “creative centre” in the brain?

There are different circuits of creativity in our brain. More important than knowing where they are is to know how to turn them on. There are different techniques to awaken creativity. The process is exactly the opposite of people´s belief. It is not a matter of adding more knowledge to our systems. It is all about simplifying, cleaning the field, unblocking barriers that stop the expression of creativity.

  • Can we train the brain?

We are training our brain in every single moment; training to create new pathways of incorporating new knowledge; or training to keep doing the same thing. It takes the same effort to keep learning to do the useful same things. We do need to reinforce some of those useful behaviours, by continuing to work on them --reconfirming the connections.

If we need to introduce new behaviour then we need to start practising enough until the behaviour will be established as permanent. Between 3 and 6 weeks is the average time to introduce a new behaviour to our brain. It also takes the same length of time to erase a behaviour that we want to stop doing or change. Today there are several trainings programs to improve specific brain functions.

  • I have heard that bullies can destroy neurons in the brain. Is that true?

Yes, what bullies specifically do is block any possibility of autonomy, creativity, they provoke the generation of “messengers” not “doers”. They cut the provision of food for new neurons to create connections, therefore to have the chance to survive. Bullies destroy neurons, identities, positive behaviours, and then destroy productivity in every sense.

  • Can you grow neurons?

Yes, start learning new tasks, new ways to solve challenges, new ways to improve communication, to increase results and productivity. Challenge yourself in any way, questioning your thoughts, your attitudes. Always look for the other side of your own decision, remember every situation has at least two ways to solve it. How can I do it differently? better? Ask for proposals, suggestions; listen to others around you. Master your skills and competencies.

  • We are part of organizational cultures. How can neuroscience research help individuals function better in organizations?

Knowing how the key social parameters Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness and Fairness act in the organization culture, individuals would be prepared to cope and be aligned with the organization culture without jeopardizing their own identity or professional progress.
